Beating

Beating is a writing diary and pop-up newsletter where I am documenting the ups, downs and in betweens of writing my second novel.

Beating is a new pop-up newsletter where I am documenting the process of writing my second novel, which has been a long time coming to say the least.

For some context, if you don’t already know, I am Iain Broome and my first novel is called A is for Angelica. It was published by Legend Press in 2012 and most people who read it liked it, including the Daily Mail, Time Out and Nathan Filer, a Costa prize-winning author, no less.

Beating, this newsletter, exists for a few reasons:

  1. Some accountability. I think journaling my way through this gargantuan task and doing so in public will help me actually do it. My plan is to write a quick post every time I do something meaningful towards writing a book. It’s a forcing function.
  2. To show my work. My hope is you will find the ins, outs, ups and downs of writing a novel in some way interesting, even educational. I definitely do not have all the answers. Seriously. But I can work in the open, invite you to watch and we can learn together.
  3. ‘The groove’. As I start this project, I am extremely out of the groove. I would like to get back into the groove. And so the words that go into this newsletter will form part of that practice. Practise, practise, practise.
  4. To log the process. While I did document at least some parts of writing A is for Angelica and it getting published, it was mostly in the form of what I might have then called ‘writing advice’. That’s not what this is. This is more a writing diary. A record of events. A story in itself.
