07: Here I go again on my own
Ahoy there landlubbers!
So, it's been a good couple of weeks since I sent you an email from The Broome Cupboard. It was getting rather fusty in here, so I thought I'd better rectify the situation by writing something and opening a window, through which I am sending you this electronic message.
None of that makes any sense. You know that already.
Anyway, it's been a busy little period for me. There was some illness, for kick off. That was fun. Then there was some UK-based holidaying that occurred, which actually was fun. And I began working on my new novel in earnest.
Heck yeah!
My extended, parenthood-inspired period of not writing has very much come to an end. I am now trying to use any free time I have to work towards getting a first draft of novel number two together. I have a deadline in my head. I'm not telling you what it is.
So like watching a man being fired from a cannon, that's all rather exciting. Follow my progress by subscribing to my near-daily audioblog, Very Meta. Or, if you like, my YouTube channel.
Other things you should check out are the last couple of episodes of the Write for Your Life podcast. Donna Sørensen (soon-to-published poet and my actual sister-in-law) is performing co-hosting duties with aplomb and we've had some interesting discussions.
I suggest starting with this week's episode, which we recorded last night. We cover my recent event at the Wilderness Festival, whether book trailers are worth bothering with, and we both talk about the planning we do and approach we take with our writing.
I should also say that if you don't know how to subscribe to these things, or even what a podcast is, just get in touch and ask. Internet nits like me make wild assumptions about what techno-knowledge people have. I'd hate you to miss out when I can point you in the right direction.
Lastly, I've been dishing out advice on reading your writing in public. If you want to see how it's done, check out this clip of a chap performing a heartbreaking, wonderful piece on love and OCD. It's right good, it is.
With infinite affection,
Iain
PS. Just remembered, it was also my one-year anniversary of being published (TOOT TOOT TO ME!). I made a video about it.
